Butler County Area I Court Jurisdiction

Area 1 bail bonds juris map The territorial jurisdiction of the Butler County Area I Court is the area from which cases may be brought and decided.

The territorial jurisdiction of the Area I Court includes the City of Oxford and all of Hanover, Milford, Morgan, Oxford, Reily and Wayne Townships.

All cases brought in the Area I Court must also be within the subject matter jurisdiction of the court.

Criminal and Traffic Cases 
Butler County Area I Court hears criminal and traffic cases on Thursday of each week. The Judge holds court from 10:00 A.M. to 12 noon. At 11:30 A.M, the Court hears Reviews of prior cases and cases with Orders to Appear. Prisoners are arraigned at approximately 1:30 P.M. Preliminary hearings, bench trials, and reviews of prior cases begin after the completion of the arraignments. Afternoon Court remains in session until all cases on the docket have been heard.

Domestic Violence cases are heard by a magistrate beginning at 8:00 A.M. on the first and second Thursdays of each month.

Video Initial Appearances (VIA) are heard daily at Area II Court for all three Area Courts. Videos are heard in the Magistrates’ Courtroom on the first floor of the Historic Courthouse in downtown Hamilton. VIA’s are open to the public.  During the hearing, a bond will be set and a court date given to go before the judge. The schedule is as follows: Monday, 10 a.m.; * Tuesday, 11 a.m.; Wednesday, 9 a.m.; Thursday, 10 a.m. and Friday, 9:30 a.m.

*If a holiday falls on a Monday then the Tuesday Video Initial Appearances will begin at 10:00 a.m.

Pretrial Conferences – Criminal, Traffic  
On Tuesday, criminal and/or traffic pretrial conferences are held at 9:00 a.m.

Honorable Judge Robert H. Lyons

The Honorable Judge Robert H. Lyons was appointed to the bench and began presiding over cases in the Butler County Area I Court in Oxford, Ohio, on February 8, 1999. He was re-elected in 2012.  Judge Lyons sits in the Area I Court in downtown Oxford, OH.  Judge Lyons is the Presiding and Administrative Judge of the three Area Courts.

Education:

  • Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Miami University
  • Juris Doctor degree from Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University
